In Matthew 5:13–16, Jesus gives His followers a powerful call: “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” These two metaphors – salt and light – are rich in meaning and offer insights into how we are to live out our faith in the world.

Salt is a preservative, a substance that prevents decay. Jesus calls us to be a preserving influence in society, helping to slow the moral and spiritual decay around us. We do this by living according to God’s Word and being witnesses to His truth. Our actions and choices should reflect God’s goodness and mercy, standing as a contrast to the world’s moral decline.

Salt also adds flavour. As Christians, we are called to bring joy, peace, and love to the world. When we live out the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23), we add flavour to life. The kindness, patience, and generosity we show can make a tangible difference in the lives of others, making the world a better place.

On the other hand, light represents truth and guidance. Just as light enables us to see, we are called to shine God’s truth into the darkness of the world. Light reveals what is hidden and provides direction. By living in the light of Christ and sharing the gospel, we help others to see the truth about God’s love and salvation.

But Jesus also warns that salt can lose its flavour, and light can be hidden. In verse 15, He says, “Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.” (Matthew 5:15)  If we hide our faith or fail to live out the values of the Kingdom, we risk becoming irrelevant and ineffective.

The call to be salt and light isn’t just about personal righteousness; it’s about impacting the world around us. We’re called to influence the culture, not be influenced by it. When we shine for Christ, others are drawn to the light of the gospel.
