Our culture tells us to “follow your heart,” but Scripture warns that “the heart is deceitful above all things.”(Jeremiah 17:9). Feelings can be wonderful, but they are also fickle. If our faith rises and falls based on emotion alone, it will be unstable and easily shaken.

The Psalms show us that emotions are part of a healthy relationship with God. David poured out his joy, grief, anger, and fear before the Lord. But what’s striking is that, in many psalms, his emotions didn’t dictate his final stance – his trust in God did. For example, Psalm 13 begins with, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?” but ends with, “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.”

Mature faith is not the absence of emotion but the ability to anchor ourselves in God’s truth when emotions are unstable. Jesus in Gethsemane expressed deep anguish, yet still prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done.”(Luke 22:42).

One way to live a faith that outlasts feelings is to develop consistent spiritual habits. Reading Scripture daily, praying regularly, and worshipping with God’s people build a foundation that holds steady when our emotions fluctuate.

Another way is to speak truth to ourselves when feelings say otherwise. When fear says, “You’re alone,” remember Hebrews 13:5 – God will never leave you or forsake you. When discouragement says, “It’s hopeless,” recall Lamentations 3:22–23 – His mercies are new every morning.

It’s also wise to surround yourself with fellow believers who can remind you of truth when you forget it. In moments of weakness, the faith of others can carry you. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 tells us that two are better than one because if one falls, the other can help them up.

Feelings are not enemies to be suppressed, nor are they infallible guides to be obeyed without question. They are signals to be understood, then weighed against the unchanging Word of God.

When we live by faith rooted in truth, our relationship with God becomes stable, resilient, and enduring – not swayed by the shifting winds of emotion, but anchored in the eternal character of the One who never changes.
