As we gather on this final Sunday of the year, we find ourselves standing between the past and the future – a moment that naturally invites reflection, gratitude, and hope. The past year is now a collection of memories – some joyful, others challenging. The year ahead remains unwritten, holding both promise and uncertainty. This moment is an opportunity to reflect on God’s faithfulness and prepare our hearts to walk with Him into the new year.
Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom”
This verse calls us to live intentionally, recognizing the brevity and significance of life. As we reflect on the passing year, we can see God’s hand guiding, sustaining, and providing. And as we anticipate the year ahead, we are invited to trust in God’s unchanging character and embrace the new beginnings He offers.
Today, I want us to explore five themes to guide us in finishing this year well and stepping into the next with purpose: reflecting on God’s faithfulness, cultivating gratitude, trusting in His unchanging nature, embracing renewal, and living with purpose.
1. Reflecting on God’s Faithfulness
Reflection is a spiritual practice that enables us to recognize God’s presence and provision in our lives.
Lamentations 3:22-23 “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness”
These words, written during a time of immense sorrow, testify to God’s unwavering compassion and mercy.
Seeing God’s Hand in the Past Year
As we reflect on the past year, we can identify moments of joy and challenge where God’s faithfulness was evident. Perhaps you experienced His guidance during a difficult decision, His comfort during a time of loss, or His provision in a season of need. Even in moments when life felt uncertain, God was at work, orchestrating His plans for your good and His glory. Consider the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. Though they faced hunger, thirst, and fear, God provided for them daily – manna from heaven, water from a rock, and His guiding presence in a cloud by day and pillar of fire by night. Similarly, as we look back, we can see how God has sustained us, often in ways we didn’t recognize at the time.
Encouragement for Intentional Reflection
Reflection is not just a mental exercise; it can also be an act of worship. It allows us to honour God for His faithfulness and learn from His work in our lives. So as this year comes to a close, take some time to ask yourself, “Where did I see God’s hand this year? How did He show His love and faithfulness?” Write down these reflections or share them with a friend or family member. Such intentional reflection deepens our faith and strengthens our trust in Him.
In Joshua 4, after crossing the Jordan River, the Israelites set up twelve stones as a memorial of God’s provision. These stones served as a tangible reminder of His faithfulness for future generations. We, too, can establish memorials of God’s goodness. This might take the form of a gratitude journal, a family tradition of sharing testimonies, or even a simple list of answered prayers. These acts of remembrance anchor us in God’s faithfulness as we step into the future.
2.Cultivating a Heart of Gratitude
Gratitude is a powerful practice that transforms our perspective and draws us closer to God. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have, allowing us to recognize God’s blessings in every season.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”
The Power of Gratitude in Difficult Seasons
Gratitude is not limited to times of abundance. In fact, it is often most transformative in seasons of difficulty. Consider Paul and Silas, who sang hymns of praise to God while imprisoned (Acts 16:25). Their gratitude was not rooted in their circumstances but in their faith in God’s sovereignty and goodness. Reflecting on the past year, what are you thankful for? Perhaps it’s the support of loved ones, the provision of daily needs, or the lessons learned through challenges. Gratitude doesn’t erase hardship, but it helps us see God’s faithfulness within it.
A Testimony of Gratitude
I recall many years ago a lady in our church sharing her story of enduring a year filled with loss and hardship. Despite her circumstances, she made a commitment to write down three things she was thankful for each day. This simple practice transformed her entire outlook, helping her see God’s blessings in even the smallest details – like the warmth of the sun or the kindness of a neighbour. Her testimony reminds us that gratitude is a choice that draws us closer to God.
As we close out this year, you might consider starting a gratitude journal. Each day, write down one or two things you’re thankful for. These could include answered prayers, moments of peace, or the beauty of creation. Over time, this practice will cultivate a spirit of thankfulness and help you recognize God’s presence in every moment.
3. Trusting in God’s Unchanging Nature
The new year often brings a mix of excitement and uncertainty. What challenges, joys, or changes lie ahead? In the midst of the unknown, we can find peace in the unchanging character of God.
Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
The Assurance of God’s Steadfastness
In a world that constantly shifts, God’s constancy provides a firm foundation. His love, faithfulness, and promises remain unchanged, no matter what we face.
Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Trust in God’s Character
I recall a story of one family who faced a season of financial uncertainty. Despite their fears, they chose to trust in God’s provision, holding onto the promise in Philippians 4:19: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Over time, they saw God provide in unexpected ways, deepening their faith and strengthening their reliance on Him. Their story reminds us that trusting in God’s character brings peace in the face of uncertainty.
Meditating on God’s Promises
To strengthen your trust in God, commit to memorizing His promises. Write down verses that speak of His faithfulness and place them in visible locations as daily reminders. When doubts arise, return to these promises and let them anchor your heart in His truth.
4. Embracing Renewal
Isaiah 43:18-19 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
The new year offers us a fresh start, an opportunity to release the burdens of the past and embrace the new work God is doing in our lives.
The Invitation to Renewal
Renewal often begins with surrender – letting go of regrets, forgiving others, or releasing the weight of worry. God’s grace enables us to leave the past behind and step into the future with hope.
Philippians 3:13-14 “…forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead.”
A Testimony of Renewal
A man named John once shared how bitterness had consumed his heart for years, stemming from a family conflict. Through prayer and God’s conviction, he sought forgiveness and reconciliation. This act of humility brought healing and freedom, renewing his relationships and his faith. His story reminds us that God specializes in making all things new.
Praying for Renewal
Ask God to renew your heart, mind, and spirit as you enter the new year. Surrender any burdens or sins that have weighed you down and invite His Spirit to work in you. Trust that He can bring transformation and restoration in every area of your life.
5. Living with Purpose
Philippians 3:13-14 challenges us to press on toward the goal God has set before us. As we step into the new year, we are called to live intentionally, seeking His will and aligning our lives with His purposes.
Discovering God’s Calling
Each of us has been uniquely gifted by God to make an impact for His kingdom. Whether through acts of service, sharing the gospel, or using our talents to bless others, we are called to live with purpose.
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Setting God-Centred Goals
Take time to set spiritual goals for the new year. These might include deepening your prayer life, committing to regular Bible study, volunteering in a ministry, or reaching out to mentor or disciple someone in your community. Goals that align with God’s purposes equip us to live intentionally and experience the joy of fulfilling His plans for our lives.
Living with Purpose
Recently I read about a retired teacher who decided to dedicate her time to tutoring children in underprivileged communities. Though her formal career had ended, she felt a renewed calling to use her gifts for God’s glory. Through her work, she not only helped students academically but also shared the love of Christ in a tangible way. Her story illustrates that living with purpose doesn’t depend on age, position, or circumstances- it’s about being available to God’s call.
Moving Forward with Hope
As we approach the new year, it’s important to carry with us the hope that comes from Christ.
Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
This hope isn’t wishful thinking; it’s a confident assurance grounded in the promises of God.
Hope for the Future
The future may hold uncertainties, but we can face it with courage because our hope is in God. His plans are good, His power is unmatched, and His presence is constant. As we step into the new year, let’s anchor ourselves in this hope, trusting that God is already at work in the days ahead.
