Self-control, the final aspect of the fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22, is a vital quality for living a Spirit-filled life. It is the ability to govern our thoughts, desires, and actions, aligning them with God’s will rather than being swayed by impulses or worldly temptations. The Bible highlights the importance of self-control throughout Scripture.
Proverbs 25:28 “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.”
Without self-control, we are vulnerable to the influences of sin, leaving us defenceless against the enemy’s schemes.
Jesus is our ultimate example of self-control. In the wilderness, He resisted the devil’s temptations by standing firm on God’s Word (Matthew 4:1-11). His unwavering commitment to God’s purpose, even in the face of suffering, demonstrates the power of self-control rooted in trust and obedience to the Father.
Living with self-control involves relying on the Holy Spirit. While our natural tendencies may lean toward selfishness or indulgence, the Spirit empowers us to resist temptation and make choices that honour God.
Titus 2:11-12 “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.”
Practicing self-control requires intentional effort and discipline. It might mean holding back an angry response, refraining from gossip, or resisting the urge to overindulge.
The Apostle Paul encourages us that God is faithful:
1 Corinthians 10:13 “… God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
This week, examine areas in your life where self-control is needed. Are there habits or attitudes that need to be surrendered to God? Ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you and guide your choices. As you cultivate self-control, you will grow in spiritual maturity and reflect Christ’s character to those around you.
