We live in a world marked by division. Whether it’s political beliefs, social issues, or differing opinions, it often seems that finding common ground is harder than ever. This can make it challenging for Christians who seek unity and community, as Jesus commanded.
John 13:35 “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
But how do we build and maintain Christian community when differences and divisiveness seem to be everywhere?
1. Focusing on our shared identity in Christ
One of the greatest unifying factors in the Christian faith is our shared identity in Christ.
Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
When we accept Jesus as our Saviour, we become part of the body of Christ, connected to each other regardless of background, nationality, or personal opinions.
By focusing on our identity in Christ rather than our differences, we can build a foundation for unity. We may have different perspectives, but we are bound together by God’s love and grace. Let’s remember that our true identity is not in political affiliations, social views, or cultural backgrounds, but in Christ alone. Focusing on this shared identity allows us to connect deeply with others, even those with whom we might not agree on everything.
2. Practicing humility and grace in conversations
In a divided world, conversations can quickly become heated or polarizing. But as followers of Christ, we are called to communicate with humility and grace. James 1:19 “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
This verse is a valuable reminder to approach conversations with patience and a willingness to listen rather than a desire to prove ourselves right. By practicing humility, we show that we value others’ perspectives, even if they differ from our own. And by extending grace, we create an environment where people feel respected and understood.
This doesn’t mean we must agree with everyone, but it means we can disagree with kindness, respect, and love. Let’s approach each conversation as an opportunity to reflect Christ’s love, focusing on understanding rather than division.
3. Embracing forgiveness as a foundation of community
Forgiveness is essential to building and maintaining Christian community. In any group, misunderstandings, offenses, and conflicts are bound to arise. That’s why the Apostle Paul pleads with us to:
Colossians 3:13 “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
When we choose forgiveness over resentment, we create a community where people feel safe to be themselves, knowing they won’t be defined by their mistakes. Forgiveness frees us from holding grudges and allows us to move forward in unity. As Christ has forgiven us, let’s extend that same grace to others, allowing love and healing to replace bitterness and division.
4. Committing to community despite challenges
Building a Christian community is a commitment, and it’s not always easy. That’s why the writer of Hebrews offers this encouragement:
Hebrews 10:24-25 “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together…but encouraging one another.”
Even when conflicts arise, when someone says something hurtful, or when we feel misunderstood, staying committed to community is part of our calling as Christians.
True community requires perseverance and dedication. It’s easy to walk away from relationships when things get hard, but God calls us to press on, to love each other, and to build one another up. This commitment reflects Christ’s love, showing the world that the church is a place of grace, resilience, and unity.
Pursuing Unity in a Divided World
In a world full of division, Christians have the unique opportunity to demonstrate unity, love, and forgiveness. By focusing on our shared identity in Christ, practicing humility in our interactions, embracing forgiveness, and committing to community, we build relationships that reflect God’s love. Let’s be intentional about pursuing unity, even in a world that encourages division. As we do, we create a community that stands as a testament to the transforming power of Christ’s love, inviting others to experience the joy of belonging to His family.
