The Great Commission, given by Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20, is the mandate for every Christian: to go and make disciples of all nations. But for many of us, the idea of evangelism and spreading the Gospel can seem daunting. We often imagine grand missions or complicated outreach programs. However, living out the Great Commission doesn’t always require grand gestures – it can be done in our everyday interactions and relationships.
Jesus’ command to make disciples begins with the simple act of sharing His love and truth with those around us. In our workplaces, schools, homes, and communities, we have countless opportunities to be witnesses for Christ. Acts 1:8 reminds us that the Holy Spirit empowers us to be His witnesses “in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” This means that the Great Commission starts in our own neighbourhoods and circles of influence. We don’t have to travel far to share the Gospel – we can start with those closest to us.
Living out the Great Commission also involves being a visible reflection of Christ in our actions. Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Our actions should back up our words. When we love others sacrificially, serve selflessly, and live with integrity, we demonstrate the love of Christ to the world around us.
Furthermore, making disciples is about more than just preaching the Gospel – it’s about walking alongside others in their faith journey. Jesus spent time teaching, mentoring, and investing in His disciples, helping them grow in their understanding of God’s Kingdom. We are called to do the same. Whether through Bible studies, one-on-one conversations, or simply offering support and encouragement, we can help others grow in their faith.
The Great Commission is not a burden – it is a privilege. Jesus promises to be with us every step of the way, empowering us by His Spirit. As we live out the Great Commission in our everyday lives, we participate in God’s eternal plan to bring people into a relationship with Him. And in doing so, we experience the joy of seeing lives transformed by the Gospel.
