Forgiveness is one of the most challenging aspects of the Christian life. Whether it’s forgiving a small slight or a deep wound, the process can feel impossible. Yet, Jesus calls us to forgive others as He has forgiven us.

Peter asked Jesus one day how many times he should forgive someone who sins against him. Jesus replied :

Matthew 18:22  “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”

Some translations read, ‘seventy time seven times.’ This response highlights that forgiveness is not about keeping score but about extending grace repeatedly.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean excusing wrongdoing or forgetting the hurt. It means releasing the desire for revenge and choosing to let go of bitterness. In doing so, we free ourselves from the burden of resentment and open the door for healing – both for ourselves and for the person who wronged us.

Forgiveness is often a process, not a one-time event. It requires prayer, reflection, and, sometimes, wise counsel. But as we lean into God’s grace, we find the strength to forgive, even when it feels impossible.

In doing so, we reflect the heart of Christ and experience the freedom that comes with letting go.
