Gratitude is a transformative practice that changes how we see the world. It shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have.
The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Notice that Paul says in all circumstances, not for all circumstances. Gratitude is not about ignoring hardship but recognizing God’s presence within it.
When we cultivate gratitude, we experience deeper joy and contentment. Studies even show that grateful people tend to be happier and healthier. But more importantly, gratitude draws us closer to God. Psalm 100:4 encourages us to “enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise.” Thanksgiving opens the door to a richer, more intimate relationship with our Creator.
One practical way to grow in gratitude is by keeping a journal. Writing down daily blessings – big or small – helps us see how God is working in our lives. Another way is by expressing appreciation to those around us. A simple “thank you” can uplift someone’s spirit and reflect Christ’s love.
Gratitude is a choice, and when we choose it, we invite God’s peace into our hearts. Let us make thanksgiving not just a holiday but a daily practice, honouring God in all we do.
