Humility is a quality that is often misunderstood in today’s world. It is not thinking less of ourselves – but thinking of ourselves less.

Philippians 2:3-4  “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Humility is essential in our relationship with God and others. Jesus modelled perfect humility when He, though the Son of God, humbled Himself to serve others. In Matthew 20:28, Jesus said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus demonstrated that true greatness comes through serving others, not through seeking personal glory.

Humility is also crucial for spiritual growth.

James 4:10  “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

When we humble ourselves, we open ourselves more to God’s grace and strength. We acknowledge our dependence on Him, and in return, He empowers us to live in a way that honours Him.

In your daily life, seek to embody humility. Look for opportunities to serve others without seeking recognition and put the needs of others above your own. As you do, you’ll find that true strength comes not from pride but from humility before God.
