A mountain climber, eager to conquer a great peak, embarked on his journey alone. He climbed for hours, pushing forward with strength and determination. As darkness fell, thick clouds covered the sky, making it impossible to see. But the climber pressed on, confident in his ability.
Suddenly, his foot slipped, and he plummeted down the mountainside. In desperation, he reached out and grabbed his safety rope, which jerked him to a stop in mid-air. Suspended in darkness, he felt panic rise in his chest. He had no idea how far he had fallen or how close he was to the ground.
Then he heard a voice whisper in his heart: “Trust me. Let go.”
The climber hesitated. “Let go? But I don’t know what’s below me! What if I fall to my death?”
Again, the voice repeated, “Let go and trust me.”
Fear gripped his heart. He held onto the rope with all his strength. The night was bitterly cold, the temperature dropped well below freezing point and his hands grew numb … but he refused to release his grip.
The next morning, rescuers found him – frozen to death, still clinging to the rope. He had been less than a metre from the ground.
How often do we find ourselves like that climber? We feel as if we’re hanging in the darkness, uncertain of the future, afraid to let go of our own control. Yet God calls us to trust Him, even when we can’t see the way ahead.
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
God sees what we cannot. He knows what lies ahead, and He is always in control. Yet, like the climber, we often cling tightly to our own understanding, too afraid to surrender to God’s plan.
Peter experienced this when Jesus called him to step out of the boat and walk on water. At first, he trusted, but the moment he looked at the wind and waves, he began to sink (Matthew 14:29-30). The lesson? We must keep our eyes on Jesus, not on our circumstances.
2 Corinthians 5:7 “For we live by faith, not by sight.”
Are you holding onto a rope of fear, refusing to let go? Maybe it’s a financial worry, a difficult relationship, or an uncertain future. God is calling you to trust Him completely. Let go of fear, let go of control, and place your faith in Him.
When you trust in God, you’ll discover that what you feared was a deep fall… was actually just two feet from solid ground.
