In today’s online world, words are everywhere. Social media, texts, comments, and emails create constant streams of communication. But while the platform may be new, the biblical principle remains: our words have power.
Proverbs 18:21 says, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” What we say (or type) can heal or hurt, build up or tear down.
As Christians, we’re called to speak differently. Paul urges, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up.” (Ephesians 4:29). That includes our online presence.
Are we using our words to bless or to boast? To bring peace or stir division?
Jesus warned, “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45). Our speech is a reflection of our inner life. So if our words are angry, bitter, or prideful – it’s a sign that something deeper needs healing.
But when we speak with grace, truth, and love, our words become a testimony. They shine light in a dark world. They point people to Jesus.
In practical terms:
- Pause before you post. Ask: Does this reflect Christ?
- Speak encouragement into someone’s life today.
- Resist gossip, slander, and criticism – even when it’s easy.
- Let your tone be as Christlike as your theology.
James writes, “With the tongue we praise our Lord… and with it we curse human beings … this should not be.” (James 3:9–10). It’s time for our speech to align with our Saviour.
Words matter. Especially now. Let’s use them to reflect the love and wisdom of Christ.
